“When safety is done by safety man, at the end of day if nobody got hurt you have to thank god. When safety is done by people, at the end of day if nobody got hurt you have to thank people and safety man.”
HSE representatives’ duty is not “doing safety” but to spread, teach and above all get safety enjoyable. Thus an effective method is the “train the trainer” approach: teaching people who in turn will educate other ones (from trained to trainer). Main advantages of this system logic are:
- recognition of trainers and facilitators inside company organization
- use of pragmatic teaching methods
- information spread in short time
- efficiently knowledge spreading
- teaching and learning techniques capitalization
- training tailored to context
- easier information sharing
- people integration
- training costs reduction
- less time to reach training goals
Teaching is also a manner to reinforce personal learning and it produces indirect outcomes like:
- growing learners’ attention that later on will turn into trainers
- leadership skills stimulation
- brushing up key skills and topics
- more effective information storing
- sharing your own know-how
“Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.”
